Skrill is a web wallet that allows for easy transfers from your own account to your online casino account. The service has been around for 15 years now and is one of the leading online payment providers in the world. Learn more about the company here.
Skrill used to be known as Moneybookers, which is what the company was called when it was founded in the UK back in 2001. Just like similar payment services the company was established to securely transfer money online. The payment system was launched in 2002 and it took barely a year and a half for them to acquire over 2 million users.
By 2008 the company is said to have operated worldwide, meaning in every country in the world. They most certainly supply their services to over 200 countries, covering 40 different currencies.
In 2007 Moneybookers was bought by Investcorp Technology Partners for just over £100 million and two years later they sold the company again for more than three times that amount.
In 2009, then, the company launched their Prepaid Mastercard, which connects the card with the Skrill account and uses the funds in that account when you make retail or online purchases with your card.
Once again the company was sold in 2013. This time to CVC Capital Partners for €600 million.
Eventually the company decided to undergo a rebranding. Instead of sticking with “Moneybookers”, the company was now named Skrill, which is actually a colloquial term for money. Even today you can still read ‘Moneybookers’ in conjunction with Skrill, but almost everywhere the company only goes by Skrill.
In 2014 the New Jersey Division of Gambling Enforcement licensed Skrill as the only e-Wallet solution for legal internet gambling in the state.
That same year the company also bought Ukash, a pre-paid purchasing service, which added to the previous acquisition of Paysafecard the year before.
It’s a straightforward affair to sign up with Skrill. It is free of charge and once you’ve completed the sign-up form, you’ll be able to make your first deposits into your Skrill account and move the money from there. As is usual with such services, you will need to go through a verification process, which is handled in different ways, according to your preferences.
Of course you will need to connect an existing credit card or bank account with your Skrill account in order to be able to deposit and withdraw cash in either direction.
Making deposits to or withdrawals from your online casino account and Skrill is similar to every other comparable payment options. It goes without saying that you’ll need an active online casino account and if you wish to make a deposit, you’ll have to be logged in and visit the cashier, where you can choose your preferred deposit method. If that happens to be Skrill, you’ll select Skrill accordingly and then choose the amount you wish to deposit.
Next you’ll be forwarded to your Skrill account, log yourself in with your details and approve the “purchase” or deposit. Once that is sorted you can head back to the casino and play with real cash there.
Withdrawals work in a very similar way and all you need here is a withdrawable cash balance in your online casino account.
Deposits and withdrawals with Skrill are often free of charge at online casinos. Sometimes a fee will apply, however, and it is always best to check this within the terms and conditions of the casino, in case it is unclear. In our own casino reviews we usually mention applicable terms.
It is not free of charge to send or receive money using your Skrill account when depositing or withdrawing from your credit card or bank account. The exact fees are available on Skrill’s homepage, of course.
When making a deposit or withdrawal you will also have to consider minimum amounts that you have to deposit or may be able to withdraw. They are likely to differ between casinos as well. Here maximum withdrawals have to be considered as well. There’s always a transaction limit, no matter which withdrawal method you use, but a casino may impose further limits beyond that.
You will also want to keep in mind that most online casinos want you to use the same method for your deposits and withdrawals. With Skrill that won’t be an issue.
Skrill is another e-Wallet that very specifically counts online gambling customers among their clientele. As such they also connect you to specific offers on their homepage, when signing up or using a casino bonus. Where Skrill is allowed as a first-time deposit method, it may just be a good idea to check out the bonus offers to get something extra out of the deal.
But keep in mind that quite a few online casinos don’t permit Skrill as a method for your first deposit, if you wish to use their welcome bonus. This is always explicitly mentioned, however, and we will usually make mention of this in our online casino reviews as well.
Another advantage of having a Skrill account is the Prepaid Mastercard you may avail yourself of. It makes online purchases and retail purchases quite convenient, but you will always need to ensure that you have enough funds in your Skrill account. Fees may apply when using the card, especially international ATM withdrawals are likely to incur charges.
Skrill is very easy to use, very safe and well regulated by the authorities and transactions are usually instantaneous.
A majority of online casinos offers Skrill among their most prominent payment options. Even if an online casino only sticks to the most common payment methods, you can find Skrill almost always among them. Sometimes the “Skrill one tap” solution is also available, which makes transactions even faster.
As such finding a casino that uses Skrill is not a problem. Your challenge will be in figuring out which casino is best suited to you and what else it might offer.
