Hugo’s Adventure Slot Review
Released in August 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as CasinoCruise, Rizk or Kaboo.
Theme and basic information
Hugo’s Adventure is actually the fourth slot now that features the little troll Hugo, who was thought up by two Danish guys, who had the idea of an interactive video game show that was brought to TV in 1990. Franchised around the world, Hugo became a surprise hit and a lot of licensed products followed, including three slots to date from Play’n GO.
Now Hugo is going on a new adventure, taking us to some island paradise, which is quite pretty, though the graphics are, of course, very cartoonish. It does feel rather as if you’re watching a cartoon when playing this slot, and Hugo pops up here and there making snarky comments.
Whether you like this theme or not may very well depend on whether you know and like the original Hugo character. Whilst it is all kind of cute and whimsical, it sometimes also feels somewhat childish and the characters was intended for children. Gambling, however, is not intended for children and this theme skates a dodgy line. But that is for Play’n GO to worry about.
On the reels we find Hugo himself, Hugoline as a stewardess, a monkey engineer and an eagle captain. Hugo, who is the wild, pays the most with 50x our stake for 5 on a payline. Hugoline is still worth 35x our stake for such a win. The eagle captain pays out 25x our stake and the monkey engineer is worth 20x our stake for such a win.
Additionally, we get the playing card symbols from 10 to A.
The Underwater Adventure
We get two features in this slot. Land a submarine (which is golden not yellow) on reel 2 and 4 and you’ll activate the Underwater Adventure. We get a bit of an old-fashioned slot machine where hearts are spinning on the reels. We can get between 1 and 3, which determines the number of lives we have for the game that follows.
That’s a classic pick-me game. At first, we choose among three shells. If we don’t find a pearl, the shell sort of eats Hugo and we lose a life. As long as we still have a life, however, we get to move on. Now we pick among three wooden boxes. If it’s empty, a gigantic anchor drops on Hugo, ending the feature.
That’s surprising and funny as well, though, so you probably won’t even mind. If you get to move onto the third stage, you have a final choice to make, which is supposed to remove the final obstacle, a crocodile. If you’re lucky, the giant anchor now buries the crocodile and you get to pick among the remaining boxes for the last big win. A 5x multiplier is applied, if you go all the way to the end.
Air Ace Free Spins
Land three plane scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 and the Air Ace Free Spins are triggered. Now Hugo pilots a little plane and he flies below the reels. You start with 1 life and 9 free spins. The slots will spin away, but you won’t be paying any attention to that. Instead you’ll be watching Hugo piloting his little plane.
He will fly around the islands and pick up extra lives and extra spins attached to balloons. He can also hit a mine, which means he loses a life.
On the reels, wilds may land randomly. These are wandering wilds, meaning they move along the reels to the left on each spin until the drop off at the end. Random multipliers of 2x can also land on the reels. You can get up to 4 of these multipliers at once, adding up to a 16x multiplier, if you are lucky.
If, at the end of the free spins, you still have a life left, you automatically trigger the Underwater Adventure.
Conclusion: A whimsical slot that can win big time
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Hugo’s Adventure is 96.53%, which is actually really good. But this is also a highly volatile slot, so you need to watch your budget. That aside, we didn’t find it terribly difficult to trigger either of the features, though the Underwater Adventure appears slightly more often than the free spins.
The features are well though-out and fit very well with the theme. But if you don’t like the theme or the fact that this could be a slot made for children, you probably won’t be having fun playing this game. If you can see past that, wins of up to 5,000x your stake are possible and a few chuckles at Hugo’s antics here and there.
