Gold Money Frog Slot Review
Released in December 2019, this game can be played at online casinos such as PlayOjo, Vera&John and Casumo.
Theme and general information
Gold Money Frog is yet another Asian themed slot from NetEnt, who have amped it up with this kind of theme in recent months, attempting to conquer the Asian market. But Gold Money Frog is not just any other new Asian slot. It is indeed a revamp of 2007 classic Super Lucky Frog, which has the distinction of being one of the first progressive jackpot games.
As such, it’s probably not surprising, that this slot doesn’t exactly feel modern. We get pond setting here, a pagoda in the background and reels framed by another temple-like structure.
It’s pretty but not sophisticated. In fact, the graphics are quite simple, almost a little cartoonish. The background music is suitably Asian inspired, friendly and lively.
On the reels we find generic playing card symbols from J to A. The high value symbols show us a kite, a bridge, an owl (a golden one) and the golden frog. The wild, scatter and bonus symbols are clearly marked as such.
The golden frog is the most valuable symbol, paying 25x our stake for 5 on a payline. The owl is worth the same, mind you. And the little bridge still pays 12.5x our stake for such a win. The kite pays out 6.25x our stake for 5 on a payline.
You can play this game from 0.25 to 50.00 per spin.
Free spins with a multiplier
There’s no need to talk about the base game here. Nothing happens except that you are waiting to activate either the bonus wheel or the free spins.
The latter is triggered by landing at least three scatters on the reels. In that case, we get 10 free spins and a coin prize. Four scatters give us 20 free spins and a higher coin prize. Five scatters are worth a lot more still, and we get 30 free spins.
During the free spins, all wins are multiplier by 3x. It is possible to retrigger the free spins with at least three more scatters. And you can trigger the bonus wheel during the free spins as well (if you win a jackpot, the win wouldn’t be tripled, though).
Catch one of three jackpots
And speaking of jackpots. You need to land the bonus wheel on three consecutive reels beginning from the leftmost reel to trigger the jackpot wheel.
Now the bonus wheel appears, which is cut into 12 sections. On 4 of them, you’ll find a prize of 100 coins. There are 4 more segments with the Minor jackpot, 3 for the Major jackpot and a single one for the Super jackpot.
The Minor jackpot seeds at €50 and may on average pay out at €250. The Major jackpot seeds at €500, paying out on average close to €2,000. And the Super jackpot seeds at €5,000, growing up to €35,000 or more before paying out. All three jackpots may be worth more or less, of course, if you manage to trigger one of them.
Verdict: For fans feeling nostalgic but beware of the abysmal RTP
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) of Gold Money Frog is 92.31 to 92.96%, which is horrible in every way. Such a low RTP is not at all justified even by the progressive (local!) jackpots. Even Mega Moolah, where you can easily win several million) has an RTP of 94%.
Whilst the slot comes with a medium volatility and a hit rate of nearly 50% (meaning you’ll see a win on almost every second spin on average), this low return to player rate will ultimately see you on the losing side. You’d need to win at least the Major jackpot to make this game worth your while.
We never saw big wins here and didn’t feel nostalgic enough for Super Lucky Frog to want to play this game to begin with. The slot is completely average in execution and gameplay and the progressive jackpots don’t make up for the abysmal RTP. There’s not a single reason for us to recommend this slot.
