Birds on a Wire Slot Review
Birds on a Wire is a video slot from Thunderkick with 5 reels and 17 paylines. Released in December 2015, you can play this game at online casinos such as Vera&John, Casumo or Mr Green.
Theme and basic information
The theme of Birds on a Wire? Well, it’s in the title: birds on a wire. Literally. They’re colourful, cartoonish, oddly shaped and utterly adorable. Oh, and they get electrocuted to explode in a shower of feathers.
If that’s not your cup of tea, you might want to switch to another slot. But, boy, you’d be missing out. The theme is unique and charming and unlike anything we’ve ever seen elsewhere. The birds are a highlight and if you don’t giggle or at least grin every time they explode, there’s something wrong with your funny bone.
And the mechanics are awesome as well. We don’t get a traditional set of reels, instead the birds come flying onto the electric wires, where they settle down five in a row. And on each ‘spin’, they fly off again, making room for a new group of birds to land on the wires.
We get a light and rhythmic background sound with squeaking birds adding to the theme.
The big fat black bird is the wild and it pays 200x our stake for 5 on a payline. The little brown bird pays out 12x our stake for such a win. The light purple one will pay out 8x our stake, followed by the green one with 6x our stake for such a win. The other birds pay out between 1x and 4x our stake for 5 on a payline.
You can play this game from 0.10 to 100.00.
Cascading wins and multipliers in the base game
The base game lives off the cascading wins and multipliers. Each time a winning combination is created, the birds are electrocuted and explode, leaving nothing but feathers behind. It’s funny in a rather twisted kind of way. New birds will land on the wires at no extra cost and more wins might be created. With every consecutive win, the multiplier on the left-hand side will climb from 1x to 2x to 3x to 5x. Any further wins will also get the 5x multiplier.
This feature might not always be enough to keep us going in other slots. But in this one you’ll keep feeling entertained by the exploding birds and whilst wins are not always big, they feel frequent enough that you will want to keep playing. Every now and then, impressive wins are possible with cascading wins and multiple 5x multiplier wins.
Free spins with massive multipliers
The cat that disguises itself with a paper bag is the scatter in the game. Three of them on the reels will activate the free spins. You’ll start off with 10 free spins. The birds will fly away to a different set of wires, fleeing the cats armed with fork and knife.
Now the multipliers increase to 4x, 8x, 12x and 20x, which makes fantastic wins possible with those cascading wins. Every scatter that appears, will award 2 additional spins. You can get up to 34 free spins in total.
But that’s not all. Once you’ve played through your regular free spins, you’ll get an Inwinty Spin, which means the reels keep spinning until you hit a final win.
Conclusion: Utterly charming and worthwhile fun
The theoretical RTP (Return to Player) for Birds on a Wire is an excellent 97.30%. It’s one of the highest around and even though this slot can be very volatile, it tends to pay out in the long run. You might hit a dry spell here and there and it could be a good strategy to not bet too high, but if you keep playing, the slot has a potential to pay you back.
Plus, it’s just too much fun to keep going. The slot is cute, quirky, charming and ridiculously funny (if that’s your cup of tea). We’ve rarely encountered such an utterly playable slot, even when we ended up losing more than we would have liked. Birds on a Wire is easily among our favourite slots, owed to the simple but effective mechanics and the wonderful theme.
